Ok... all very nice ideas and i think they would add something interesting to the game, i did not read all the 12 pages of player posts (bugger for you devs that have to, heh) and in case someone mentioned it already i might repeat it here, sorry for that. Here goes:
Lasting effects.
So far, i have only read about effect taking hold when you enter the evironment and dissapearing if you leave the environment, but what about it when you are not there anymore? You were after all in a hostile natural/unnatural phenomena area and could drag lasting effects affecting your ship and equipment.
I was thinking that you could suffer equipment, shield, armor or structure degradation based on how long you were there, could be a set ammount of time or skill level dependant, 'tho i think time would be best, and it would either go away or leave your ship affected forever.
Imagine you had your sensors, weapons, ship, whatever affected during your stay in the area, but then you go back home and notice damage where there was none and the damage keeps increasing slowly and steadily as time passes.
Or you notice that the range of your weapons (or other equipment effects) is off and not what it used to be, maybe you could repair it and that is that, it works fine again.
Or have it permanently affected (even if repaired) so you end up with reduced efficiency (problems targetting, misfire of weapons, reduced speed, unable to lock, etc) forcing you to change your ship and/or equipment completely (Heh, there goes your nice expensive T2 ship/T2 piece of equipment).
Or after a couple/few days it just passes and your ship is just fine.
I think not only what affects/helps you at the moment is nice, but what affects you afterwards would be even more interesting.
Also, since the explorer, scavenger "classes" will be coming around, it would be cool to have some abandoned structures/alien ruins in these hazardous places for people to get into, so if you want to explore/discover some useful info/piece of lost hi-tech/alien tech, well, then you have to pay and sweat for it.
And get in fast, get out fast or you wake up in a clone.
